Dear 6th Graders,
I hope you are all turning in your Patterns and Rules Unit Test.
Before doing so please note there is a test correction: Question #22 should have the number 21 not 24 as the last number in the given sequence.
If you have already turned in your test you may correct number 22 and resend it to me. Thanks to Taila for finding my typo!
I will still accept the test next week but am posting your unit project which needs to be completed by the end of class on Tuesday, May 29th. That means you have three class periods: Thursday, Monday, and Tuesday to work on the unit project. The Patterns and Rules Unit test and project are the final two major grades for math this quarter. Please work hard and get them turned in on time. (DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE — START NOW!)

Dear 6th Graders,
Well done to the students who submitted the “Snow Storm” problem.
Today we will tackle a new topic which is beautifully connected to our previous topics.
Exercise 1: Please watch and take notes from the video.
It explains evaluating a function rule. In many ways this is doing the opposite of what we just did with tables and rules. Given a function rule you will learning how to evaluate the function for different x-values.

Dear 6th Graders,
Well done to the students who submitted the “fast typist” and “fundraising” problems.
Today we will focus on one problem similar to the problems completed for today. I will also provide an explanation for the “fast typist” and “fundraising” problems.
Before trying to tackle the snow storm problem it is very important you understand the fast typist and fundraising problems. Here are the answers and explanations provided:
ANSWER AND EXPLANATION FOR Taila Fast Typist Tuesday April 24
ANSWER AND EXPLANATION FOR Fundraising Problem
If you have any questions about my strategy and methods for solving the above problems please let me know.
Here is the problem of the day:
Snow Storm Problem Grade 6 Math Thursday, April 26 2012
Reflection (to be written after completion of the above problem)
1. How did you figure out the rule (equation) for the snow storm in NYC?
2. What is the simplest form of the equation that expresses that rule?
3. How did you figure out the rule (equation) for the snow storm in Boston?
4. Did you use slope and y-intercept to help you determine each of the rules? If so, how?
5. Do the two lines intersect when graphed on the same coordinate plane?
6. What does that intersection point signify?
Complete the problem and reflection and submit to me by Thursday of next week (Monday and Tuesday are holidays).
I suggest you take the time this weekend and during the two-day holiday to review the previous assignments on this site and make sure you have completed them.
If you need to Skype for an explanation please let me know!
Keep up the good work!
Ms. Shabica

Dear 6th Graders,
Today for class you will need to complete two different problems that are connected to patterns and problem solving. Each problem has everything to do with finding a rule from information given. It is up to you to determine how the information fits together in order to arrive at the correct rule. The second problem asks you to take on the additional task of graphing both situations and making a comparison between the two. These might be a little more complicated than our normal problems which is why you only have two of them. Please take the time to go through each of the problems carefully. You need to submit your answers to both problems by Thursday morning, April 26th.
Good Luck!
Ms. Shabica

Dear 6th graders,
Today we are going to continue with patterns and tables. Our goal for today is to understand and be able to write a rule from a given table.
Exercise 1: Watch the video for writing rules from tables.
http://www.phschool.com/atschool/academy123/english/academy123_content/wl-book-demo/ph-936s.html
Please take notes while watching for the first time. If you need to stop the video to note something down you may press pause. Then make sure you watch the video for a second time letting it run uninterrupted. You will find that after taking notes during the first viewing, the second time you watch the lesson it will make more sense.
Exercise 2: Lesson reflection. (Submit by Tuesday morning)
Respond to the following questions:
1. How do you determine whether a function is linear or not?
2. How do you determine the changes in the x values and the changes in the y values?
3. What is the slope?
4. What is the y-intercept?
5. What is the significance of slope in determining a rule?
6. What is the significance of the y-intercept in determining a rule (or the equation of the function)?
Exercise 3: Practice Problems. Complete the following practice problems. (Submit by Tuesday morning).
1. Write the function rule
| x | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| y | 0 | 7 | 14 | 21 | 28 | 35 | 42 |
2. Write the function rule
| x | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| y | -3 | -2 | -1 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
3. Write the function rule
| a | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| b | 5 | 8 | 11 | 14 | 17 | 20 |
4. Write the function rule
| x | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| y | 1 | 4 | 7 | 10 | 13 | 16 |
