Dear 7th Graders,
For Wednesday’s class please view the pre-algebra page. You will complete the same reflection questions posted there for life science as well.
I do not want to give you redundant work so if you feel you can speak about both classes on one reflection that will be fine. If not, please send answers to the questions for both pre-algebra and life science.
Thanks,
Ms. Shabica

Friday, June 1st, 2012
Dear 7th Graders,
Thank you to the students who have submitted the unit test.
Final grades are due in the middle of next week. Therefore, please use Wednesday and Friday classes to catch up on any missing work. Make sure you are not missing any lab work too. Labs still count more than general homework assignments.
I have not been diligently updating the virtual school assignment sheet. If you have any questions about missing work please e-mail me. I am more than willing to cc your parents if needed.
Most of you are missing at least one assignment or two. A few of you have completed all assignments on time and in an impressive manner. For the few that will have no catch up work to do please use this time to focus on your other subjects and other work that you are missing from other disciplines.
Next week we will focus on teacher, class, and self-evaluations.
Thanks,
Ms. Shabica

Dear 7th Graders,
Today you will take your final unit test.
After much thought I have decided the test will be open-book. I know that some of you do not have your formal science text with you. Therefore, the test is also open-computer. This does not mean you are allowed to cut and paste responses from passages for which you search and find on the internet. This means you are allowed access to information using your formal text from class or the internet in addition to notes and PowerPoint presentations while completing the test.
In addition, the test will be in a different format. There are no multiple choice questions. It will consist of four topics– that you choose from a list of 22.
Therefore, choose wisely. Choose the topics about which you feel the more knowledgeable.
The completed test is due: Wednesday, May 30th. GOOD LUCK!

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012
Dear 7th graders,
We are now moving from a study of invertebrates into a study of vertebrates.
You need to complete the following activities:
Exercise 1:
View and take notes from the following presentation.
As usual I have included the presentation in both PowerPoint and pdf:
Vertebrate Structure and Function PowerPoint
Vertebrate Structure and Function pdf
Exercise 2:
Complete the on-line virtual dissection of the mammalian eye.
This is a good site to start at for an introduction:
http://www.eschoolonline.com/company/examples/eye/eyedissect.html
This site will help you to understand what our dissection would have looked like had we done it in class:
http://anatomycorner.com/main/image-gallery/cow-eye/
Finally, this site is an excellent dissection as well. Make sure you follow the steps of the dissection and use the “eye diagram” link at the bottom to help you learn the parts of the eye.
http://www.exploratorium.edu/learning_studio/cow_eye/index.html
Exercise 3:
Using the above sites to help you complete the dissection of the mammalian eye you must complete the lab handout on pages 21 – 25 of this packet:
The Mammalian Eye Pages 21 – 25 Lab Investigation
Exercise 4:
After completing the lab you will be able to complete the following assessment on eye structure and function found on pages 12-13 of this packet:
Assessment sheet “The Mammalian Eye” skill and practice pages 12 – 13
Both the lab and the assessment on the mammalian eye are due: Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012
This is a lot of work to do but you have a full week of class to do it.
E-mail me with any questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Ms. Shabica

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012
Dear 7th graders,
For Friday and Tuesday you will focus your time on another dissection that should increase your understanding of invertebrate structure and function.
Exercise 1: Use the following link to access the online virtual grasshopper dissection.
http://www.ent.iastate.edu/ref/anatomy/ihop/
For the dissection make sure you go through each system individually. This means you need to highlight a system by clicking on the circle next to it and then clicking again to get rid of the system. In addition, make sure you click on “labels on.”
Exercise 2: Observations
Make a sketch of three of the six systems — include labels. You can scan your observation or take a picture and send it as an attachment.
Exercise 3: Analysis
Choose one of the three systems you sketched and do some research online to answer the following questions in a short essay.
1. What is the purpose of the system?
2. How does the structure of the system influence the function?
3. How is the system characteristic of invertebrates?
4. What would need to be different in this system for a vertebrate?
Your observations and analysis essay are due on Wednesday, May 16th, 2012
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Ms. Shabica

Earthwork Dissection Update: The website for the virtual dissection of an earthworm is working much better.
Therefore, you need to go through the “Lab Manual” and read about the anatomy of the earthworm. Once you have correctly identified the external and internal anatomy you need to answer all six questions found in the “Journal” and send me your answers. The answers to the six journal questions are due: Friday, May 11th.
Have Fun with the dissection!
