Grade 7 Math

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Dear Grade 7,

This is our last class together for the year.

Spending so much time on my computer was not what I had in mind when I became a teacher.  Although I continued to enjoy our interactions through the work you submitted and the correspondence of questions, I missed the hustle and bustle of our classroom.  I also missed your faces and smiles (and even the infrequent frowns).

Prior to March 22nd, my intention had been to return to AISB for one final school-year 2012-2013.  Unfortunately, this is no longer possible.  I will be returning to New York City to teach at the High School where I was teaching before moving to Bamako.  If you happen to find yourself in the city please get in touch with me.  My personal e-mail address:  dedougou@hotmail.com

I have enjoyed our time together and only wish it had not been cut short in such a drastic way.

Please keep in touch!

Ms. Shabica

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Dear Grade 7,

Please make sure you have made contact with your partner and are collaborating on solving linear inequalities by graphing problems.  In addition, we are going to begin solving systems of linear inequalities problems today and things can get a little dicey.  Therefore, you should be all caught up with the work and it will help to have a “partner-in-crime” when moving forward with the material.  Systems of inequalities is a wonderful topic, but can be confusing as well.

Exercise 1:  Review the video explaining systems of linear inequalities from Wednesday.

Exercise 2:  Study my example here on how to solve a system of linear inequalities.

Step 1 — We show the solution of a system of linear inequalities by graphing them (similar to the solution of a system of equations).  First put each inequality in the slope/intercept form:  y = mx + b

Step 2 — Graph each line using the y-intercept and the slope.  If the inequality is > or < make the line dotted.  If the inequality is  >  or  <  make the line solid.

Step 3 — Using a “test-point” decide which side of the line contains the solutions set and shade that region.  (Usually when y > you shade above the line and when y< you shade below the line.)

Example:  Solve this system of linear inequalities

a)  3x + 4y > -4

b)  x + 2y < 2

First place both inequalities in slope/intercept form:

a)  4y> -4 – 3x

a)  y > -1 -3/4x   OR y > (-3/4)x -1

b)  2y < 2 – x

b)  y < 1 – 1/2x  OR  y< (-1/2)x + 1

Next I graph each on one coordinate plane — see pdf here:

Solving Systems of Linear Inequalities

If this still doesn’t make sense you can find even more help here:  http://www.purplemath.com/modules/syslneq.htm

Exercise 3:  Complete these five problems.  (Due:  Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012)

Graph each of the linear systems to find a solution:

1.

y  –3

y  6 – 3x

2.

y  3x – 2

y  –x + 3

3.

x – 4y  20

x – 5y  20

4.

x  5

3y  2

5.

5x + 2y  3

x + y  4

For an extra extension (or for those who feel they have really mastered systems of linear inequalities and have some extra time during the four-day weekend) here are 10 problems with their solutions.  Print out the worksheet, try the problems without looking at the answers and then compare your answers with the given solutions.  This is not required.  (It will not be on the virtual school assignment speadsheet.)  BUT it is a lot of fun for those of you looking for a challenge!  If you do attempt it, please let me know how you do.

http://www.kutasoftware.com/FreeWorksheets/Alg1Worksheets/Systems%20of%20Inequalities.pdf

Enjoy your four-day weekend!

Ms. Shabica

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Dear Grade 7,

I am going to delay our unit test due to the challenges of the final sections and the benefit to spending a little more time on graphing inequalities.  (The test will no longer be at the end of this week.)

For your work today I am going to ask you to partner with someone else in the class.  (You will be communicating via e-mail.  If you can’t find a student e-mail please let me know.)

These are the students participating in virtual school.  Please note your partner for today’s class:

Leena with Laye

Mathilda with Gabriel

Kailou with Mikkel

Baba and Cheick

Hussein with Samuel

Exercise 1:  Writing your own linear inequalities.

Please write your own set of five linear inequalities.  You may use my practice problems as a guide, but they should not be copied.  Once you have developed your set, please e-mail the five problems to your partner.   Your partner will have e-mailed you their problem set.  You must solve each others problem sets.  Write back with the solution or a description of the solution.  Make sure you understand how to solve a system of linear inequalities by graphing it correctly.

Things to watch out for:

Using a dashed or a solid line.

Shading one or the other side of the border line.

Exercise 2:

Watch the following PowerPoint on SYSTEMS OF LINEAR INEQUALITIES.

As always, take notes while watching for the first time.  Then, watch it again a second time letting it run all the way through without interruption.

http://www.phschool.com/atschool/academy123/english/academy123_content/wl-book-demo/ph-083s.html

Exercise 3:

Write a reflection to your partner that explains how to solve a system of linear equations by graphing.

Exercise 4:

Write a short e-mail to me indicating your completion of the problem set and the lesson reflection.   This will be due to me by Friday morning.

Good Luck!

Ms. Shabica

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Dear Grade 7,

The title of today’s lesson is:  Graphing Linear Inequalities.

This corresponds with the first part of section 8-8 in your textbook if you have it with you.

The objective of today’s lesson is to:  Understand and graph linear inequalities.

Exercise 1:  Watch the video that explains graphing linear inequalities.

http://www.phschool.com/atschool/academy123/english/academy123_content/wl-book-demo/ph-082s.html

As always, please watch and take notes (press pause if needed) for the first time.  Then, watch a second time all the way through without pausing.  You will find that the video will make more sense the second time as you watch it without interruption.

Exercise 2:  Respond to the following reflection questions (submit by Wednesday morning):

1.  What is the difference between a linear equation (also known as a linear equality) and a linear inequality?

2.  What determines whether you create a graph of  a linear inequality with a solid line or a dashed line?

3.  What is the first step in graphing a linear inequality?

4.  How do you know which side of the boundary line to shade?

5.  How can you check your work to make sure you are correct?

Exercise 3:  Practice Problems (Submit by Wednesday morning).

Complete the following practice problems on graphing linear inequalities:

Graph each linear inequality.  (You will be graphing on a coordinate plane.)

1.      y ≤ 2x – 6

2.       y ≥ – 3x + 1

3.     3x – 2y > 18

4.   -3x + 6y < 30

5.       3x – y ≥ 15

6.  y > -3

7.      3x – 7y ≤ 21

8.      x ≥ 4

Since the solutions for the practice problems are going to be on a graph — is it possible to complete the 8 problems on graph paper and then scan it or take a picture and send as an attachment?  It would be very helpful!  Please note:  the graphing of linear inequalities that we are doing now is not on the number line, but on the coordinate plane.  Use the video as your example.

Good Luck!

Ms. Shabica

UPDATE:  Please note I’ve changed the Unit 8 Test for Friday, April 27th.  (Monday, April 30th is a holiday)

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Dear 7th graders,

I am pleased to be back with all of you again — although sad it is not in person.

I will be guiding you through the final concepts of Unit 8.  Our Unit 8 Test will be held on Friday, April 27th (less than two weeks from now).  I am leaving plenty of time for extra review.  Normally our classes are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  In the interest of continuity and routine I will maintain this schedule.

For Monday, April 16th please use this link to access your math lesson plan.

Grade 7 Math Monday April 16 2012

As you can see it is all about section 8-7 of your textbook, “Solving Systems of Linear Equations.”  On the lesson plan I’ve included a video that explains the concepts covered.  You may e-mail me as well with any concerns (mshabica@aisbmali.org) but be aware that I am four hours behind — when you are doing your lesson at 8:00 am I will still be sleeping since I am on the East Coast of the U.S. and it will be 4:00 am.  I will try to answer all questions by the following day.

I know this entire situation has been less than ideal but I will do my best to continue addressing all your needs in math until June 8th.  I look forward to hearing from you all soon!

Ms. Shabica
